FUTIA Gets NUC Approval for 12 New Degree Programmes
The Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA), Akwa Ibom State, has received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to introduce 12 new degree programmes for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The university announced the development in a statement issued by its Registrar, Offiongita Nkang, on behalf of the institution.
According to the statement, the approval was conveyed in an NUC letter dated September 11, 2026, following a successful resource verification visit to the university.
The newly approved programmes include Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry and Environmental Management Technology.
Others are Biotechnology, Environmental Health Science, Health Information Management, Community Health Science and Estate Management.
With the latest approval, FUTIA now has 36 NUC-approved degree programmes, four years after commencing its pioneer academic session in 2023/2024.
The university said the expansion reflected the commitment of its management and Governing Council to widening access to higher education while strengthening research, teaching, manpower development and community service.
FUTIA also urged qualified candidates who participated in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to check their admission status through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
Candidates who did not initially select FUTIA as their first-choice institution but scored at least 160 in the UTME may also be considered, provided they change their first-choice institution to the university through JAMB CAPS.
Meanwhile, the university announced that physical screening for newly admitted students was ongoing at its take-off campus in Ikot Abasi.
The screening exercise is scheduled to run from Monday, October 12, to Friday, October 23, 2026, beginning at 8 a.m. daily.
Candidates offered admission are expected to accept their offers, print their JAMB admission letters and report to the university with the relevant documents for screening.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Leo Daniel welcomed the NUC approval, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities for residents of Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State, the South-South region and other parts of Nigeria.
He added that the university would continue to develop innovative academic programmes aligned with current and future educational and workforce needs.
