Governor Yusuf’s Defection Postponed to January 12
The highly anticipated defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been rescheduled.
A close associate of the governor informed Talk Nigeria News that the official defection, initially set for Monday, January 5, 2026, will now take place on Monday, January 12, 2026.
Earlier reports had indicated that Governor Yusuf was ready to formally join the APC on January 5. However, a source present during a meeting between the governor and Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja on Friday revealed that Yusuf requested additional time. The governor reportedly intends to consult with a few remaining state legislators and key stakeholders who have yet to fully endorse the move.
Kano, a historic city and central hub of northern Nigerian politics, has recently been the center of intense speculation regarding the governor’s planned defection. Political observers note that the development could significantly alter the state’s political landscape, reflecting the strategic importance of the timing and coordination of the defection.
