Wawrinka Kicks Off Farewell Season with Dramatic United Cup Victory
Swiss tennis legend Stan Wawrinka began the final chapter of his career with a gripping 5-7, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/5) win over France’s Arthur Rinderknech, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead for Switzerland in their United Cup tie on Saturday.
The 40-year-old endured nearly three and a half hours of intense play against an opponent ten years his junior, following teammate Belinda Bencic’s straight-sets victory over Leolia Jeanjean, 6-2, 6-4. This marks Wawrinka’s first appearance in Perth, making the triumph even more memorable.
“After 20 years on the tour, it’s incredible to finally play here. Today’s match was tough, but I’m thrilled we could start 2-0,” Wawrinka said after converting his first match point.
The United Cup, featuring 18 nations, is a mixed-team tournament that serves as a key lead-up to the Australian Open later this month. Meanwhile, in Sydney, China opened its campaign with a 2-1 win over Belgium, led by Zhang Zhizhen.
