Troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF) successfully thwarted an attempted bandit incursion into several communities in Shanono Local Government Area, Kano State, following a prolonged gun battle.

The confrontation, which began late Thursday night and continued into the early hours of Friday, affected Yankwada, Babanduhu, and neighbouring villages. Nigerian Army spokesperson in Kano, Maj. Zubair Babatunde, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the assailants, armed and riding motorcycles, launched the attack sporadically firing at the communities.

Babatunde explained that the attempted raid was a retaliatory move after the bandits had lost several fighters to military operations during an earlier encounter last week. The attackers stormed the villages around 1:00 a.m., but troops swiftly engaged them, successfully dislodging the assailants.

He noted that the timely intervention prevented casualties and a significant loss of property, assuring residents of the military’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding lives and assets in the area. Babatunde urged community members to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence.

The army spokesperson emphasized that military personnel remain on high alert to prevent further attacks and maintain peace across Kano State.
