The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed a tragic shooting incident that occurred on March 23, 2025, at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Atakpa, Calabar, involving a police officer who opened fire on bystanders, killing one person and injuring two others.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Ugbo Irene, the incident occurred at approximately 5:55 AM when Inspector Effiong Bassey, who had just returned from his night duty at Ekondo Microfinance Bank, began exhibiting abnormal behavior. Inspector Bassey reportedly refused to hand over his assigned AK-47 rifle, barricaded the station’s gate, and prevented officers and civilians from entering or leaving the premises.

Efforts to calm the situation through dialogue proved unsuccessful as the officer’s behavior escalated. Tactical Units and Patrol teams were deployed to the scene, but Bassey fired at bystanders who had been advised to leave the area. The gunfire hit three individuals, including 41-year-old Ijeoma Wilson Obot, who later succumbed to her injuries. The other two victims, identified as Charles Mkpang and another unnamed individual, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment in stable condition.

The officer was eventually disarmed and taken into custody, where he is undergoing further investigation into the incident.

Following the shooting, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 6 Headquarters, Calabar, alongside the Cross River State Command Management Team, visited the hospital where the injured victims were receiving treatment. The AIG also made a donation to support their medical expenses. Additionally, efforts are being made to engage key stakeholders to de-escalate tension in the community.

The Cross River State Police Command has urged victims’ families and the public to remain calm as investigations continue. The statement assured that the outcome of the investigation will be made public, reaffirming the police force’s commitment to justice, fairness, and equity.

The Command extended its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
