Former Anambra State Governor Chris Ngige’s convoy came under attack on Tuesday, though he was not present when the incident occurred.

Ngige’s former media aide, Sir Fred Chukwuelobe, said the attackers, dressed in what appeared to be police and military uniforms, opened fire on the pilot vehicle. A police officer in the car was shot, and the gunmen reportedly took his gun and uniform.

A woman recording the scene on her phone was shot and killed. A shop owner who ran out to see what was happening was also hit by bullets. He lost a large amount of blood and is scheduled for surgery to remove the bullets. Medical personnel say he is stable and expected to recover fully. The pilot vehicle suffered extensive bullet damage.

No police officer died in the attack. The escort leader who sustained gunshot wounds has undergone surgery and is expected to recover. Doctors also confirmed that none of the bullets lodged in the shop owner’s spine.

Chukwuelobe said he spoke with Ngige, who confirmed the attack and said arrangements were being made to ensure proper treatment for the victims. Ngige also extended condolences to the family of the woman who died.

Police authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
