Nigeria to Receive $9.5m Abacha Loot from UK’s Jersey
Nigeria is poised to repatriate an additional $9.5 million (£7 million) in assets traced to former military ruler, General Sani Abacha, from the United Kingdom’s Jersey.
Reports indicate that authorities in Jersey have approved the transfer of the funds, which are classified as proceeds of “tainted property” linked to the late head of state, who governed Nigeria between 1993 and 1998.
The money, held in a Jersey-based bank account, had been entangled in prolonged legal disputes, despite being initially recovered during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. Legal obstacles delayed its return for several years.
A breakthrough was achieved in December 2025 when Jersey’s Attorney-General, Mark Temple, executed a memorandum of understanding with Nigerian officials, clearing the way for the repatriation.
This latest recovery builds on previous agreements between Nigeria and Jersey, which have already facilitated the return of more than $300 million (£230 million) in Abacha-related assets.
