National Assembly to Release Certified Copies of Tax Laws Amid Alleged Discrepancies
The National Assembly has announced plans to release certified copies of tax bills signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, following public concerns over alleged discrepancies in the Tax Acts.
Mr. Bullah Bi-Allah, Director of Information for the National Assembly, stated on Thursday that the Clerk of the National Assembly has been directed to make the transmitted tax bills available, enabling the public to verify the authenticity of the documents.
Bi-Allah noted that the Assembly had observed differences between the parliamentary votes and proceedings and the gazetted versions of the passed tax Acts. The decision to release the certified documents comes in response to public calls for transparency, allowing citizens to review and confirm the bills.
He added that although there has been significant public interest, only a few individuals have formally requested Certified True Copies (CTCs) of the harmonised bills, all of which have been duly processed.
The Clerk is also collaborating with the Federal Government Printing Press to publish the duly certified and assented Acts in accordance with legal requirements, with the gazettes expected to be ready on Thursday. Bi-Allah clarified that while initiating the gazetting process is the Clerk’s duty, the responsibility for printing and publication rests with the Federal Government Printing Press.
To enhance procedural integrity, the National Assembly will review the transmission and gazetting processes for bills. Going forward, all bills for presidential assent will be routed through presidential liaison officers, and no request for gazetting will be accepted by the printing press unless initiated by the Clerk or an authorised representative.
Bi-Allah concluded by thanking Nigerians for their engagement, affirming that the Assembly remains committed to transparency, accountability, and professionalism in the legislative process.
