Jigawa Government Reaffirms Ban on Night Grazing to Curb Road Accidents
The Jigawa State Government has reiterated its commitment to enforcing the ban on night grazing by herders to reduce road accidents, particularly those caused by camels.
Governor Umar Namadi made this known while receiving officials of the Camel Rearers Association of West Africa during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Dutse.
He expressed deep concern over the increasing number of fatalities and injuries caused by camels crossing major roads, emphasizing the government’s priority in ensuring the safety of residents.
The governor also acknowledged the illegal activities of some herders, especially those from neighboring countries. As part of measures to address the issue, he announced plans to register Fulani herders in the state for easy identification.
In his remarks, the Secretary-General of the West Africa Rearers Association of Nigeria, Abubakar Mustapha Andaza, said the visit aimed to formally introduce the association and seek guidance on best practices for their operations in Jigawa.
Reports indicate that stray camels have been responsible for numerous road accidents, resulting in several deaths and property losses across the state annually.
