IGP to Meet Protesting Retired Police Officers Over Pension demands
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, is set to meet with retired police officers who have been protesting over unpaid pensions and poor post-service welfare. The retirees, under the Contributory Pension Scheme, have been staging demonstrations across different parts of the country, demanding that their entitlements be fully paid and their conditions addressed.
In a statement released on Sunday by Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi, the police chief acknowledged the concerns raised by the retired officers and assured them that their grievances are being taken seriously. He said the IGP has directed that a meeting be held with representatives of the protesting officers to listen to their complaints directly and seek a peaceful resolution.
The statement added that the welfare of both serving and retired police personnel remains a top priority for the Force leadership. Adejobi also called for calm, urging the retirees to suspend further protests as efforts are underway to engage with relevant government bodies to resolve the issues.
The protests by the retired officers have drawn public attention in recent weeks, as many of them claim they have been neglected since leaving active service. Some are demanding a return to the old pension scheme, saying the current system does not provide adequate support after retirement.
The IGP’s planned meeting is seen as a significant step towards addressing long-standing concerns within the police community about retirement benefits and post-service care.
