Electoral College demands transparency as INEC begins Sen Natasha Uduaghan Recall Process

The Nigerian Electoral College has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct the recall process of Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan with transparency and strict adherence to due process.

INEC, in a letter to the senator on Wednesday, notified her of a petition from registered voters in her constituency seeking her removal from the Senate, citing Section 69 of the 1999 Constitution as amended. The notification also referenced Clause 2 (a) of the Commission’s 2024 Regulations and Guidelines for Recall.

In response, the Electoral College, through its Executive Director, Kunle Lawal, emphasized the need for fairness, warning that any attempt to politicize the process could undermine the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

The organization urged all stakeholders to respect the legal framework and allow the recall process to proceed without interference.

“We emphasize that INEC must conduct this process with transparency, fairness, and strict adherence to its guidelines, ensuring that the will of the people is not manipulated. Any attempt to short-circuit or politicize the recall process would undermine the credibility of our democratic institutions,” the statement read.

As a non-partisan institution, the Electoral College reiterated its commitment to educating Nigerians on their civic rights and responsibilities, stressing that democracy thrives only when due process is upheld.
