EFCC Detains Ex-Kaduna Governor El-Rufai Over Alleged N423bn Fraud
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken former Kaduna State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) leader Nasir El-Rufai into custody in Abuja over alleged financial irregularities during his 2015–2023 administration.
Contrary to reports by some associates claiming his release, EFCC sources confirmed that El-Rufai remains under interrogation as investigators continue to probe the allegations. He reportedly complied with the commission’s invitation on Monday morning, arriving at the EFCC office in Jabi, Abuja, around 11 a.m., accompanied by supporters.
Officials indicated that El-Rufai may remain in custody for additional questioning, with the possibility of a court-ordered remand to allow investigators sufficient time to conclude the probe and prepare what they describe as a comprehensive case.
The investigation follows a June 2024 report by an ad hoc Kaduna State House of Assembly committee, which reviewed loans, contracts, and financial transactions under El-Rufai’s administration. The committee alleged misappropriation of funds, including approximately N423 billion, and noted instances where due process was bypassed. It recommended that anti-corruption agencies pursue legal action against the former governor and certain former cabinet members for alleged abuse of office, diversion of public funds, and money laundering.
El-Rufai’s spokesperson had previously dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and scandalous.
In a related development, the Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a three-count criminal charge against El-Rufai at the Federal High Court in Abuja over the alleged unlawful interception of communications. The charge, FCT/ABJ/CR/99/2026, references a live television interview in which he reportedly admitted knowledge of the monitoring of the National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu’s phone communications. Authorities argue the alleged acts breach provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024, and the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, posing a threat to national security.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar weighed in, accusing the administration of President Bola Tinubu of politically persecuting El-Rufai. In a social media birthday message, Atiku described him as a man of intellect and courage, underscoring that his public service record remains notable despite ongoing challenges.
Meanwhile, Kaduna saw hundreds of protesters, led by civic groups, converge on the State House of Assembly demanding updates on the legislature’s investigation into El-Rufai’s administration. They submitted a petition urging lawmakers to expedite public briefings and ensure transparency. Speaker Yusuf Dahiru Liman assured the demonstrators that the Assembly is committed to due process and oversight, affirming that no individual is above the law.
El-Rufai has also confirmed that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has invited him for questioning in a separate matter, with his legal team indicating he will comply at a later date. Investigations by multiple agencies are ongoing, and legal proceedings, including possible arraignment, are expected to define the next stages of the case.
