The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has threatened to withdraw medical services across the state following the abduction of doctors by suspected kidnappers.

The state chairman of the association, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, announced the decision in a statement issued on Friday in Benin City. He said the action would take effect from 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2026, in response to the kidnapping of two doctors between January 1 and 2, 2026.

According to Oseghale, the incidents have heightened fears over the safety of healthcare professionals in Edo State, posing a serious threat to their lives and disrupting effective healthcare delivery.

The association is demanding the immediate release of the remaining abducted doctor and the strengthening of security measures to protect residents, particularly health workers. It also called for regular engagement between the state government and the Edo NMA on security-related issues.

“A safe working environment is essential for healthcare providers. We will continue to withdraw our services until our demands are met and our colleagues are guaranteed safety,” Oseghale said.

He urged security agencies to treat the matter with urgency, warning that they would be held responsible for the consequences of the planned action if the situation is not promptly resolved.

The NMA recalled that two brothers and medical doctors, Dr. Abu Ibrahim Babatunde and Dr. Tahir Abu, were abducted by gunmen on January 1, 2026, at about 7:30 p.m. outside their residence along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, in Etsako West Local Government Area.

The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of ₦200 million but later killed Tahir Abu, a newly qualified medical graduate of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. His elder brother, Dr. Abu Ibrahim Babatunde, who is undergoing housemanship at the Edo University Teaching Hospital, Auchi, remains in captivity, with the abductors now reportedly demanding ₦100 million for his release.

Reacting to the incident, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, expressed condolences to the bereaved family, describing the abduction and killing as tragic, painful, and deeply regrettable. He noted that kidnapping has become a serious security challenge and assured residents that the state government remains committed to intensifying efforts to combat the crime and restore safety across the state.
