ECOWAS Condemns Venezuela Attack, Calls for Respect of National Sovereignty
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has raised concerns over the unfolding situation in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, urging the international community to respect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a statement released on Sunday, the regional bloc said it was closely following developments in Venezuela with growing concern. ECOWAS acknowledged that sovereign nations have the right to address international crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking, but stressed that such actions must be carried out within the framework of international law.
The organisation reminded states of their obligations under international law, particularly Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which emphasises respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations.
ECOWAS also aligned itself with the African Union’s position issued on January 3, 2026, which called for restraint and inclusive dialogue among Venezuelans as the most effective way to address the country’s challenges.
Reaffirming its solidarity with the people of Venezuela, ECOWAS underscored the principles of non-interference and respect for national independence. It urged all countries to avoid actions that could threaten Venezuela’s territorial integrity or worsen tensions.
The bloc stated its continued support for the Venezuelan people as they seek to determine the future of their country through a peaceful and inclusive process.
