DPO Summoned By Police Headquarters Over Alleged Extortion, Threat to Good Samaritan
The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of GRA Asaba, Delta State, CSP Christopher Udoh (also referred to as Odoh), has been summoned to appear at the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja for questioning over allegations of threatening a citizen who acted in good faith.
The complaint arises from an incident involving Tomi Akporoghene Wojuola, who rushed a young man who collapsed on a roadside to a hospital in Asaba in 2025, after seeking medical advice over the phone. Despite acting as a responsible citizen, Wojuola said he was accused of murder by the police.
“I made the decision to take a dying young man to the hospital, even though others walked past. After he passed away, I requested the police be informed, following proper protocol,” Wojuola explained.
Instead of being commended, he was taken to GRA Police Station, where he alleges the DPO threatened him and treated him as a criminal. “CSP Christopher Udoh told me he would deal with me for acting like ‘Jesus.’ He even said that after this, if I saw anyone dying again, I would just walk past,” Wojuola said.
The situation reportedly worsened even after the deceased’s family confirmed their son had an underlying medical condition. Wojuola claimed he was only spared formal charges due to the intervention of a “very top government functionary” who came to the station to attest to his innocence. Despite this, he alleges the police extorted money, leaving him with only ₦2,000.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Wojuola said the experience explained why many Nigerians now choose to film emergencies rather than intervene.
The Police Complaint Response Unit (NPF-CRU) confirmed that the DPO has been summoned and is expected at the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja next week to answer questions regarding the complaint. The unit reiterated its commitment to addressing incidents of misconduct and enforcing accountability.
