Death Toll Rises to 28 as South Korea Wildfires Continue
At least 28 people have died as wildfires continue to ravage parts of South Korea, authorities confirmed on Friday.
According to local news agency Yonhap, the fires, which began last week, have injured dozens and scorched approximately 48,000 hectares of forest. So far, around 38,000 residents have been forced to evacuate their homes.
Speaking on the ongoing crisis, Lim Sang-seop, Chief of the Korea Forest Service, stated that efforts were underway to contain the disaster.
“We plan to mobilize all available resources to extinguish the main flames by the end of the day,” Sang-seop said.
The wildfires have been exacerbated by strong, dry winds and an ongoing drought, making containment efforts challenging for emergency responders.
