BREAKING: Police Inspector’s Accidental discharge Kills 40-Year-Old Man in Calabar
A 40-year-old man, identified as Sunday Ejimot, has lost his life following an alleged accidental discharge from the service pistol of a Nigerian police inspector at a drinking spot in Calabar, Cross River State.
The tragic incident occurred at about 1:40 p.m. on Sunday, December 29, 2025, at a bar located along Asimita Road in the Ikot Ansa area of Calabar Municipality, the state capital as confirmed by Talk Nigeria News.
A police situation report revealed that the officer involved, Inspector Atimbang Ojogwu (AP No. 198424), attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), was drinking with members of his Biase community when the incident happened. The inspector reportedly brought out his service pistol, a Tokarev model, without realising that the weapon had already been cocked.
In the process, he allegedly pulled the trigger, firing a single round that struck Ejimot in the neck as he sat among the group.
The victim was immediately rushed to the Navy Reference Hospital, Calabar, where he was confirmed dead on arrival. Police authorities confirmed that the inspector has been disarmed and taken into custody, while the deceased’s body has been deposited at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) morgue for preservation and autopsy.
