Benue Tragedy: Three feared dead in tragic Picnic at Buruku River

At least three people are feared dead after a leisure outing at River Buruku in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State ended in tragedy.

The incident reportedly occurred on December 26, 2025, when a group of individuals visited the river for a picnic. What began as a recreational trip later turned fatal, with reports indicating that some members of the group were swept away, leading to suspected drowning.

Recovery efforts were carried out the following day, during which three bodies were retrieved from the river. Social media reports showed emergency responders at the scene, including an ambulance and security operatives, as a large crowd gathered along the riverbank during the operation.

River Buruku is notorious for its strong and fast-moving currents and has recorded several drowning incidents in the past, particularly during festive periods when visitors frequent the area for relaxation. Despite repeated safety warnings from community leaders and relevant authorities, the river continues to draw residents and visitors.

As of the time of reporting, families of the victims are awaiting official confirmation and more details from authorities regarding the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
