Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has broken his silence following a tragic car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two close friends and members of his team.

The crash occurred on Monday, December 29, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway and resulted in the deaths of Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele. Joshua, who was involved in the accident, sustained minor injuries.

The 36-year-old boxer received medical treatment and was discharged on New Year’s Eve before returning to the United Kingdom on Saturday. On Sunday, he made his first public statement since the incident through a post on his social media platforms.

Joshua shared a photograph showing him standing alongside the families of the deceased, captioned simply, “My Brother’s Keeper.” The image conveyed a message of solidarity and support as the families mourn their loss.

Both Ghami and Ayodele were scheduled to be laid to rest later the same day.

Reports indicate that the accident occurred after Joshua’s SUV collided with a stationary truck, allegedly following a brake failure. The vehicle was carrying Joshua and three others at the time of the crash.

Joshua had travelled to Nigeria for a holiday after his recent knockout victory over Jake Paul. He reportedly avoided more severe injuries after switching from the front passenger seat to the back shortly before the collision, a move said to have been prompted by concerns that his size was obstructing the driver’s view.

Although he sustained a leg fracture, he was said to be in stable condition and did not require emergency medical intervention.
