AFCON 2025: Osimhen Praises Onuachu, Speaks on Super Eagles’ Round of 16 Clash
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has commended Paul Onuachu for his contribution to Nigeria’s 3–1 victory over Uganda at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, describing the forward’s performance as both encouraging and well-deserved.
Onuachu found the net for the first time in the tournament during Tuesday’s group-stage encounter, drawing applause from the Nigerian supporters and teammates.
Speaking to journalists in the mixed zone after the match, Osimhen expressed personal joy over the striker’s breakthrough, noting their long-standing relationship and mutual respect.
According to Osimhen, Onuachu’s display reflected his commitment and quality, adding that the goal was a positive moment not just for the player but for the entire squad. He stressed that individual club affiliations are irrelevant at this stage of the competition, as the team is fully united behind a single national objective.
The Napoli forward, who captained Nigeria in the match, emphasized that the Super Eagles are already looking ahead, with full concentration now on their opponents in the round of 16. He explained that discussions within the camp are firmly centered on upcoming fixtures and maintaining momentum in the tournament.
Nigeria concluded the group stage in dominant fashion, recording three wins from three matches to finish top of Group C with a maximum of nine points. The result secured the Super Eagles’ place in the knockout phase as one of the competition’s most in-form teams heading into the next round.
