Kano Deputy Governor Under heavy criticism Over Alleged Derogatory Remarks

The Women Lawyers Congress has urged Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to publicly clarify or apologize for alleged derogatory remarks made by his Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam.

The controversy arose after a widely circulated video captured Abdussalam making harsh comments about “Gwaggo,” a term used to refer to former First Lady Hafsat Abdullahi Ganduje.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Chairperson of the Congress, Barrister Nafisa Abba Ismail, condemned the remarks, describing them as part of a troubling pattern of disrespect toward prominent figures. She criticized the Deputy Governor’s behavior as unbecoming of a leader and raised concerns about his leadership ethics and respect for women.

The Women Lawyers Congress urged Governor Yusuf to clarify whether the comments were directed at Professor Hafsat Umar Ganduje. If they were, the Deputy Governor must either explain his remarks or issue a formal apology to both Professor Ganduje and the people of Kano.

Barrister Nafisa emphasized that the issue goes beyond personal disputes, as it touches on the principles of dignity and respect for women in leadership. She warned that if Abdussalam continues making such statements, the Women Lawyers Congress will take legal action to hold him accountable.

The statement also called on public figures to refrain from using their influence to demean women, stressing the need for immediate action to prevent such behavior from becoming an accepted norm in governance.
