Tinubu Appoints Rotimi Oyedepo as Director of Public Prosecutions
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mr. Rotimi Iseoluwa Oyedepo, SAN, as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Federal Ministry of Justice.
The appointment follows Oyedepo’s successful transfer from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the Federal Civil Service. A letter dated December 23, signed by Omolabake Mafe on behalf of the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, stated that the appointment was made in the public interest.
The development was formally announced on Tuesday by Mr. Abiodun Oladunjoye, Director of Information and Public Relations at the State House. Oyedepo will assume office following the retirement of the incumbent DPP, Mr. Abubakar Babadoko, who is set to complete the mandatory eight-year tenure on December 31, 2025.
Oyedepo, a Law graduate from the University of Ilorin in 2007, was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2008. He brings over 15 years of experience from the EFCC, where he earned a reputation for prosecuting complex economic and financial crimes. He served in key roles, including Head of the Monitoring Unit, and was a crucial member of the Federal Government’s legal team in the landmark arbitration case involving Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) against the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
His professional achievements include being named EFCC Outstanding Staff of the Year in 2014 and Best Financial Crimes Prosecutor in 2019. According to the Presidency, Oyedepo’s appointment is expected to strengthen the Federal Ministry of Justice, reduce reliance on external legal counsel for major prosecutions, and enhance coherence and consistency in the government’s legal strategy.
