Chief of Naval Operations, Dies After Brief Illness
Rear Admiral Musa Katagum, Chief of Operations at the Naval Headquarters, has died after a brief illness.
A senior and widely respected officer of the Nigerian Navy, Katagum most recently served at the Defence Headquarters and previously held the position of Chief of Naval Intelligence, according to counterinsurgency source Zagazola Makama.
He was recently appointed Chief of Operations by the Chief of Naval Staff, a role that placed him at the centre of key operational planning and execution within the Navy. In that capacity, he supervised critical missions and contributed significantly to strengthening Nigeria’s maritime security architecture.
Throughout his career, Katagum was regarded as a strategic thinker whose impact on national security was profound. He was instrumental in refining operational frameworks, enhancing intelligence coordination, and mentoring officers who have since risen through the ranks under his guidance.
His leadership style, marked by precision and foresight, was credited with reinforcing the Navy’s operational readiness and sustaining vigilance across Nigeria’s territorial waters. Colleagues said his efforts were central to consolidating the service’s ability to protect maritime assets and national interests.
News of his passing has drawn tributes from across the Armed Forces, with fellow officers describing him as a model of discipline, courage, and professional excellence. Senior naval officials reportedly expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a leader whose influence and legacy will continue to shape the institution.
Beyond his official responsibilities, associates remembered him for his humility, generosity, and steadfast commitment to the welfare of his subordinates and peers.
