At least two people were killed and six others sustained injuries after a shooting occurred outside a church in the United States on Wednesday.

The incident happened at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah, where a funeral service was taking place. Law enforcement authorities confirmed the attack and said investigations are ongoing.

Police disclosed that no suspect has been arrested so far, although a large-scale manhunt has been launched. Officials clarified that the shooting was not random, but also emphasised that it was not directed at the church or any religious group.

According to church officials, there were indications of a confrontation in the church’s parking area before gunshots rang out. A church spokesperson, Glen Mills, said an altercation occurred outside the building, which escalated into gunfire.

In response, security agencies deployed heavy resources to the scene, including about 100 law enforcement vehicles, while helicopters conducted aerial surveillance of the area.

Salt Lake City Mayor, Erin Mendenhall, condemned the violence, stating that such an attack should never occur at a place of worship or during a solemn event honouring a life.

The shooting comes amid heightened tension across parts of the United States, following recent protests sparked by the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old woman, Renee Nicole, by a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis. While ICE officials claimed the shooting was in self-defence, Minnesota authorities have said the exact level of threat faced by officers remains unclear.
