Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe has formally resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and announced his defection to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in a move that further consolidates the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Abia South lawmaker made the announcement on Wednesday at a political gathering in Enugu, where former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, alongside other prominent South-East political leaders, officially declared for the ADC.

Addressing supporters at the event, Abaribe publicly confirmed his departure from APGA and pledged full allegiance to his new political party.

“Mr David Mark, Chairman of the ADC, this is the party’s logo on this cap, and I am wearing it for the first time,” Abaribe said to loud applause.
“I also wish to announce that earlier this morning, I resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance. As of now, I am fully a member of the ADC, following my brother and leader, Mr Peter Obi.”

Abaribe’s defection came just hours after Obi and several political leaders from the South-East geopolitical zone announced their decision to join the ADC, citing the need for a broad opposition alliance capable of rescuing Nigeria from what they described as years of poor governance under the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The leaders explained that the decision followed months of extensive consultations and was part of a wider strategy to build a united political front ahead of future elections.

Speaking at the event, Obi described Nigeria as being at a critical crossroads, calling on citizens to take decisive steps to reverse the country’s socio-economic decline.

“As 2025 comes to an end today, we stand at the doorway of a new year, which we hope will mark the beginning of Nigeria’s long-awaited socio-economic transformation,” Obi said.
“For Nigeria, the time for decisive action is now. Nigeria is not poor; we were looted into poverty.”

Obi further warned that the country was in deep distress, pointing to rising insecurity, unemployment, widespread poverty and institutional decay as key challenges.

Abaribe, a veteran legislator and influential political figure in the South-East, has remained a prominent voice in national affairs. Analysts view his defection as a major boost to the ADC’s expanding profile and a clear indication that political realignments are intensifying as the 2027 election cycle draws closer.
