Ex-FBI Chief James Comey set to face perjury charges soon
Federal prosecutors are getting closer to deciding whether to charge James Comey with perjury. That decision deadline is coming up this Tuesday.
The case is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Virginia. They are investigating whether Comey lied under oath when he testified to Congress on September 30, 2020, about his part in investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.
If the grand jury approves charges next week, it would be a high-profile indictment of a well-known government figure — someone President Trump and his supporters call part of the so-called “deep state.”
So far, Comey has not been officially charged, and he has maintained that he told the truth under oath. His lawyer has not responded to requests for comment.
