2027: I Can Step Down for a Stronger Candidate – SDP’s Adebayo

Social Democratic Party (SDP) chieftain Adewole Adebayo has signaled his willingness to forgo his 2027 presidential ambition if a more capable candidate emerges within the party.
Speaking on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television, Adebayo stressed that his political aspirations would not come before Nigeria’s progress.
“I have an aspiration, and I’m working on it, but God is the author of tomorrow. If there is someone better suited to fix Nigeria’s challenges, I will step aside because what we want is a country that works,” he stated.
He assured that the SDP would present a unifying candidate who can challenge President Bola Tinubu and avoid divisive politics based on religion or ethnicity.
Meanwhile, talks of a major opposition alliance continue to gain momentum. On March 20, 2025, key opposition figures—including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai—revealed plans for a coalition aimed at unseating Tinubu in the next election. The administration has faced criticism over economic hardships, high inflation, and soaring living costs.
The coalition is looking to build on the 12 million combined votes Atiku and Obi secured in 2023, which exceeded Tinubu’s total by over four million votes.
With ongoing crises in the PDP and Labour Party, alongside dissatisfaction within the APC, the SDP is emerging as a potential alternative. El-Rufai and some of his allies have already defected to the party, while speculation continues over Atiku and Obi possibly making a similar move—though neither has confirmed such intentions yet.
