Moon Sighted, Sultan Declares Sunday Eid Al-Fitr

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the first day of Shawwal 1446AH in Nigeria.
The announcement was made on Saturday at the Sultan’s palace in Sokoto after the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, in collaboration with the National Moon Sighting Committee, received multiple reports confirming the sighting of the Shawwal moon across the country.
With the moon sighted, Saturday, March 29, marks the last day of Ramadan 1446AH, while Sunday will be observed as Eid Al-Fitr. The Sultan accepted the reports and officially declared Sunday as the first day of Shawwal.
He congratulated Nigerian Muslims on the successful completion of Ramadan and prayed for God’s guidance and blessings. He also urged continued prayers for the peace, progress, and development of the nation.
The sighting of the moon signifies the end of the 29 or 30 days of fasting observed by Muslims worldwide during Ramadan. This marks the second time in six years that the Shawwal moon has been sighted on the 29th day of Ramadan. From 2020 to 2022 and in 2024, Nigerian Muslims observed 30 days of fasting, as the moon was not sighted on the 29th day.
