The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has refuted claims of being a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement on his đť•Ź handle on Friday night, the former Anambra State governor distanced himself from an APC gathering where his name was mentioned, emphasizing that he remains unaffiliated with the party and has no intention of joining the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration.

Obi reaffirmed his commitment to ethical politics, rejecting any form of blackmail, toxic engagements, or political manipulation.

“I have seen reports circulating on social media about an APC gathering where my name was mentioned. Let me be clear: I do not engage in toxic politics, blackmail, or any form of political manipulation. My name should not be used in such narratives,” Obi stated.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I am not a member of the APC, nor do I intend to join. My political stance is rooted in integrity, fairness, and issue-based engagement. I strongly believe that aspirants in any political party should be assessed solely on their competence, capacity, and compassion—qualities necessary for building a better Anambra and a better Nigeria.”

Speaking on Valentine Ozigbo, Obi stressed that all aspirants should be judged on leadership qualities rather than party affiliations or personal attacks. He urged political stakeholders to avoid toxic narratives and focus on credibility, vision, and the ability to deliver meaningful change.

He further emphasized that party primaries, whether through voting, selection processes, or interviews, must remain free, fair, and transparent, ensuring that every legitimate aspirant gets a fair chance to contest without bias or manipulation.

“As the Anambra governorship election approaches in November, I sincerely hope that all parties, including mine, will uphold the principles of democracy by conducting fair and credible primaries,” Obi added.

“This election presents an opportunity for Nigeria to embrace true democracy—something that, unfortunately, remains elusive in our country today.”

He called on political parties and stakeholders to reject toxic politics, stating that only through justice and fairness can Nigeria progress toward the new nation its citizens aspire to build.
