2027 Presidency: Call me ‘stupid’ but I’ll run for presidency, Peter Obi Declares bid
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his determination to contest the 2027 presidential election, insisting that insults, ridicule and name-calling from political opponents will not deter his ambition.
Obi said personal attacks would not distract him from offering himself for national service, stressing that his focus remains firmly on Nigeria’s future. Reacting to criticisms against him, he declared that no amount of abuse would change his resolve, stating that even if he is called names, he will still pursue the presidency.
The former Anambra State governor spoke during an interactive session with Nigerians on X Space, where he addressed issues ranging from governance and the economy to security and his political plans. He maintained that he is better prepared than many aspirants to confront Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
According to Obi, his background in business management places him at an advantage. He explained that he rose from being a small-scale entrepreneur to building a major corporate enterprise, an experience he said many of his rivals do not possess. He added that this exposure has equipped him with practical skills required to manage national finances responsibly.
Obi further argued that meaningful economic reform is key to addressing Nigeria’s security problems. He noted that widespread poverty, unemployment and weak economic structures have largely driven insecurity across the country, insisting that fixing the economy would significantly reduce crime and unrest.
He said that if elected, his administration would prioritise small businesses and local manufacturers, describing them as the backbone of successful economies worldwide. Obi promised to create a supportive environment for them through improved access to funding, stable policies and better infrastructure.
Addressing speculations linking him to a possible vice-presidential role within the African Democratic Congress coalition, Obi firmly dismissed the claims. He made it clear that he is not seeking to be a running mate, reiterating that he would be a presidential candidate in 2027 and would appear on the ballot.
While rejecting the rumour, Obi confirmed his support for the coalition, noting that he has been involved from its early stages. He said collaboration among like-minded individuals is essential to rescuing Nigeria and emphasised the importance of openness and mutual respect in political engagement.
Responding to concerns from a supporter in Akwa Ibom State over alleged insults from leaders within the coalition, Obi urged restraint. He advised his supporters to avoid violence or abusive language, even when provoked, stressing that leadership is about service, not personal attacks.
Obi reiterated that derogatory remarks do not weaken his resolve, adding that Nigeria’s problems cannot be solved through bullying or name-calling but by placing competent and credible individuals in positions of responsibility. He urged his supporters to counter misinformation with facts, remain peaceful, and focus on promoting ideas and solutions rather than engaging in hostile exchanges.
