2027: Obasanjo Broker Obi-Kwankwaso ADC Presidential Ticket Against Atiku

Reports indicate that former presidential contenders Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are exploring a joint ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections, with plans to challenge former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential nomination.

Obi, who previously ran on the Labour Party (LP) platform, and Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) had attempted an alliance before the 2023 elections, but negotiations collapsed due to disagreements over ticket arrangements.

Sources reveal that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is spearheading renewed talks, believing that a united Obi-Kwankwaso ticket would strengthen the opposition’s chances of mounting a credible challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. Obi reportedly joined the ADC last week, signaling his intention to contest the presidency, while Kwankwaso is engaging with political leaders to finalize his next steps.

Insiders suggest that Obasanjo has tentatively persuaded Kwankwaso to accept a running mate position, with supporters of the duo considering two strategic options:

  1. Secure the ADC presidential ticket to contest directly against Atiku in the primaries.
  2. Explore an alternative platform outside the ADC if the primaries prove unviable.

The renewed partnership reflects their 2023 electoral performances: Obi received over six million votes nationwide, dominating the South-East, Lagos, and FCT, while Kwankwaso achieved a decisive victory in Kano State, leveraging the influence of his Kwankwasiyya movement.

A close aide to Kwankwaso told Daily Trust that “high-level discussions with key political stakeholders are ongoing,” adding, “We firmly believe Nigeria urgently needs a shift from the current climate marked by insecurity and systemic collapse.”

Attempts to obtain comments from the Atiku Media Office and the Obidient Movement were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
