Kogi Government Bans Rallies, Regulates Security Convoys Over Security Concerns

The Kogi State Government has imposed a total ban on rallies and public gatherings that could disrupt public peace, citing intelligence reports of planned unrest.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, disclosed that the decision was based on intelligence indicating that certain individuals were attempting to infiltrate the state using fake security personnel to incite violence.
“In view of this, and effective immediately, no individual, group, or organization is permitted to hold any form of rally within the state until further notice,” the statement read.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo also met with the Kogi State Traditional Council, led by the Attah of Igala, to discuss maintaining peace and security. The royal fathers commended the proactive steps taken to protect lives and property.
Regulation of Security Convoys
To further ensure law and order, the government has directed that any individual or group entering the state with security convoys must obtain prior clearance from relevant security commands. This measure aims to prevent unauthorized armed movements.
“We have intelligence suggesting that some individuals are trying to enter Kogi under the guise of security personnel to cause unrest. This directive ensures only accredited operatives operate within the state,” the statement added.
Governor Ododo has instructed Local Government Chairmen to oversee security within their areas, urging community leaders to engage their people in sustaining peace.
Suspensions and Security Deployments
The state government has also announced the suspension of fishing activities in parts of Kogi West after violent clashes in Kasemiya, Katubo, and Umozu Ette led to two deaths. Security operatives have been deployed to restore order.
Similarly, in Kogi East, security forces have been sent to Ankpa Local Government Area following a communal clash in Enjema District between Ika-Odele and Ika Ochala communities.
In Kogi Central, intelligence reports suggest that certain elements are planning to stage violent rallies under the guise of political and religious agitations, aiming to incite destruction.
To enforce these measures, Governor Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (Rtd.), to collaborate with security agencies, with officers placed on high alert.
Call for Public Vigilance
The government urged residents to remain law-abiding and vigilant, reporting any suspicious activities to security agencies.
“These measures are temporary but necessary for the greater good. Any attempt to undermine Kogi’s peace will be met with the full force of the law,” Fanwo emphasized.
This development follows recent peaceful protests in Oduape, Kabba/Bunu LGA, where residents decried rising cases of kidnappings and violent crimes, urging the government to take urgent action.
