Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has justified the National Assembly’s ratification of the state of emergency declared in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasizing that the decision was made in the national interest rather than for partisan reasons.

Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central, stated that lawmakers approved the proclamation despite public criticism, stressing that their actions were guided by their constitutional duty to maintain peace and stability.

The state of emergency, which led to the suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the State House of Assembly, was endorsed by both chambers of the National Assembly. Speaking at an event where he was awarded an Honorary Doctoral Degree in Law by Ekiti State University, Bamidele reaffirmed that the legislature’s priority remains the security and unity of Nigeria.

He acknowledged that the decision had drawn criticism but insisted that emergency rule is a constitutional measure aimed at preventing anarchy. He cited Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates the National Assembly to ensure national stability during crises.

The Senate leader also highlighted the formation of a National Peace Committee to mediate the political crisis in Rivers State. He urged Nigerians to appreciate the legislature’s efforts in safeguarding national security, rather than viewing the decision through a partisan lens.

Bamidele assured that the Senate, under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, would continue to collaborate with the executive to foster economic and political progress. He emphasized that lawmakers would remain committed to their oath of office, undeterred by criticisms, as they strive to promote democratic governance and national unity.
