The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned Biola Adams-Odutayo over the death of Adetunji “Teejay” Opayele, co-founder of Nigerian tech start-up Bumpa.

Opayele, a 32-year-old software engineer, died in a fatal accident on March 4, 2025, along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, Lagos. Reports indicate that he was riding his power bike when he was allegedly hit by a vehicle driven by Adams-Odutayo, a healthcare professional.

The incident sparked outrage, with a petition on Change.org calling for justice. The petition alleged that Adams-Odutayo failed to assist the injured Opayele after the crash, fearing her car would get stained.

On Saturday, Lagos police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed in a statement on X that Adams-Odutayo was arraigned and granted bail.

“We can confirm that following a thorough investigation, Abiola Odutayo ‘f’ was arraigned in Court 1, Tinubu, on March 12, 2025, after she was discharged from the hospital, for driving on a public highway in a reckless and careless manner without due care and attention to other road users, causing the death of one Tunji Opayele ‘m’ aged 32, and thereby committing an offence,” Hundeyin wrote.

The court granted her bail and adjourned the case to April 16, 2025. The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency, fairness, and justice in the matter.
