C’River Acting Governor Intervenes, Mediates in LG Chairman Impeachment Crisis

Acting Governor of Cross River State, Dr. Peter Odey, has successfully mediated in the impeachment crisis between Bekwarra Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Theresa Ushie, and the councillors.
On March 20, 2025, nine out of ten councillors initiated impeachment proceedings against Ushie, citing allegations of financial mismanagement, lack of transparency, and abuse of office. They also accused her of making unilateral decisions and failing to communicate effectively with the legislative arm.
In response, Governor Odey swiftly intervened, convening an emergency stakeholders’ meeting on March 24, 2025, followed by a second session on March 28 at his temporary office in the Glass House, Calabar. After extensive discussions, it was established that the crisis largely resulted from communication breakdowns.
Hon. Ushie acknowledged the concerns raised, apologized for any lapses, and reaffirmed her commitment to working collaboratively with the councillors and stakeholders.
Governor Odey urged all parties to prioritize governance over personal disputes, stressing the need for dialogue, inclusiveness, and adherence to due process in resolving conflicts. Drawing from his experience as a former UNDP advisor and legislator, he emphasized that impeachment should be a last resort rather than a political tool.
He also advised public office holders to proactively engage in consultations to prevent similar issues in the future.
In their remarks, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Elvert Ayambem; State APC Chairman, Barr. Alphonsus Eba; and Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Emmanuel Ironbar, all called for unity. They reiterated the importance of peace and urged stakeholders to support the State Governor’s “People First” agenda, emphasizing that societal progress thrives in an atmosphere of harmony.
