At least 10 people have been killed in an attack by unidentified gunmen in Ruwi village, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State during a wake-keep ceremony.

Sources from the community confirmed that the assailants stormed the area late Thursday night, opening fire on mourners. A local source, who requested anonymity, revealed that the bodies of the victims were taken to a hospital in Bokkos following the attack.

Confirming the incident, the Plateau State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, stated that while an attack did occur, the official casualty figure had not yet been determined.

According to the police statement, Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Adesina expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Plateau State community.

“On March 27, 2025, at about 10:00 pm, the Command received a report of unknown armed assailants who invaded Ruwi village at approximately 9:20 pm, firing indiscriminately,” Alabo stated.

He confirmed that several innocent residents, who had gathered for a wake-keep, lost their lives, while others sustained injuries of varying degrees.

Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police directed an immediate deployment of officers to the scene. Additional security personnel and operational assets from the State Headquarters were also dispatched to Bokkos and surrounding areas.

To strengthen security, the Area Commander of Pankshin was ordered to relocate to Bokkos for strict supervision of operations and to prevent further attacks.

Commissioner Adesina also visited the scene personally to assess the situation, review the level of security deployment, and commiserate with the families of the victims.
