House of Reps makes U-turn on Bill to Strip VP, Governors of Immunity

The House of Representatives on Thursday made a U-turn on the second reading of a bill seeking to remove immunity for the vice-president, governors, and deputy governors.

The reversal followed a motion by House Majority Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, leading to a reconsideration of the bill, which had passed second reading on Wednesday.

The proposed legislation, sponsored by PDP lawmaker Solomon Bob from Rivers State, aimed to enhance accountability in public office by amending Section 308 of the Constitution. This section currently shields the president, vice-president, governors, and deputy governors from civil or criminal prosecution while in office.

Bob argued that lifting immunity would curb corruption, eliminate impunity, and promote transparency in governance.

Additionally, the House rescinded its decision on a separate bill seeking to abolish the death penalty, which had also passed second reading during Wednesday’s plenary session.
