The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has made history by appointing Professor Kamoru Olayiwola Usman as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), marking the first time a Yoruba scholar has held the position. The appointment, approved by Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Oguejiofo T. Ujam, aligns with ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity and academic excellence.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the university emphasized its commitment to merit-based leadership. Professor Ujam highlighted the need to prioritize competence over sectional interests, stressing that inclusivity and meritocracy are vital for the institution’s progress. Alongside Usman’s appointment, Dr. Mansur Adebowale Saddiq was named Acting Director of the Medical Centre, reinforcing the administration’s focus on excellence.

Professor Usman, who succeeds Professor Urama, holds a PhD in Mathematics Education and previously served as Provost of the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo State. A fellow of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria and a member of various professional bodies, he will serve an initial two-year tenure with the possibility of renewal.

During a recent Senate meeting, Professor Ujam underscored the collective responsibility of repositioning UNN as a leader in ethical and innovative learning. He called for the elimination of divisive tendencies that have hindered academic progress, stating that the university must reclaim its position as Nigeria’s premier institution.

The meeting, attended by key university officials and members of the governing council, also saw Professor Ujam emphasize the need for UNN to lead in global educational trends, particularly in fields like artificial intelligence. He commended Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for championing experiential learning and urged the university to align with this vision.

Reaffirming his commitment to fairness and transparency, Professor Ujam assured the academic community that UNN must not fall behind in the ongoing technological revolution. He called on staff and students to work together in fostering an environment that supports research, collaboration, and technological advancement.
