The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially commenced the payment of a new ₦77,000 monthly allowance for corps members across the country. This follows the federal government’s recent approval of an increased minimum wage and a subsequent adjustment of corps members’ stipends.

Reports indicate that corps members nationwide have started receiving the new payment, marking a significant increase from the previous allowance of ₦33,000. The increment aligns with the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of young graduates undergoing the one-year mandatory national service.

The salary adjustment for corps members is part of the broader implementation of the newly approved minimum wage, which has led to salary reviews for federal employees, including members of the NYSC scheme. President Bola Tinubu had earlier assured Nigerian youths that his administration would prioritize their welfare, particularly those engaged in national service.

A senior NYSC official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that the payments have commenced. “Yes, corps members have started receiving the new allowance. This is in line with the government’s directive following the implementation of the new minimum wage structure,” the source stated.

Corps members across various states have expressed excitement over the increment, describing it as a long-overdue relief amid Nigeria’s rising cost of living. Some took to social media to celebrate the increase, while others urged the government to ensure timely payments and further improvements in their welfare conditions.

“I just received my alert, and I can’t believe it! This will go a long way in covering our monthly expenses,” said a corps member serving in Abuja.

Another corps member in Lagos added, “We appreciate the government for this, but we also hope for improvements in accommodation and other welfare packages.”

The increased allowance is expected to boost the purchasing power of corps members, contributing to local economies in various states where they are posted. Experts believe it will enhance morale and encourage active participation in NYSC programs, particularly in community development projects.

While the new stipend brings relief, some corps members have raised concerns about inflation and the rising cost of essential goods and services. Many are calling for additional support, such as transportation and housing allowances, to further cushion economic challenges.

The NYSC management has assured corps members that all necessary measures have been put in place to ensure a seamless disbursement process. The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to corps members’ welfare, urging them to remain dedicated to their service year.

“With this increase, we expect corps members to be more motivated and focused on their duties in their places of primary assignment. We will continue to work closely with relevant authorities to enhance their overall welfare,” he stated.

The increment in the NYSC allowance comes as a welcome development amid ongoing economic challenges, signaling a renewed government effort to support Nigerian youth and encourage national service participation.
