I am not certain of my presidential ambition in 2027 – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stated that he is unsure whether he will contest the 2027 presidential election. Atiku, who has run for the presidency six times, made the remark during an interview for the television program Untold Stories with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie.

His statement comes just days after he announced the formation of a coalition of opposition leaders aimed at unseating the All Progressives Congress (APC) government led by President Bola Tinubu. When asked if he would run in the next election, Atiku responded, “I don’t know because there has to be, first of all, a viable platform, more than any other time in the political history of this country, particularly since the return of democracy.”

While not ruling out the possibility of contesting, Atiku emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to have a competent and experienced leader. “I have not seen Nigeria in such dire need of credible leadership as it is now,” he said. Reflecting on past political alliances, he recalled the 2014 merger that brought several opposition figures together, leading to a successful election outcome. “About four of us, or is it three? We all ran for president, and one of us emerged. We all supported the one who emerged, and he won,” he added.

Speculation continues to grow over Atiku’s potential role in the 2027 elections, with reports suggesting he may throw his support behind former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi or former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai.
