Super Eagles’ World Cup Hopes Dim After Late 1-1 Zimbabwe Equalizer

Nigeria’s bid for the 2026 FIFA World Cup took a hit after the Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.
Coming off a 2-0 victory over Rwanda, hopes were high for another crucial win. However, despite creating multiple scoring chances, Nigeria struggled to convert their dominance into goals.
Victor Osimhen finally broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute, heading home a well-worked assist from Tolu Arokodare and Ola Aina.
Just as the Eagles seemed set for victory, Zimbabwe delivered a heartbreaking equalizer in the 90th minute. Tawanda Chirewa capitalized on poor defending, slipping through the backline to beat Stanley Nwabali in goal.
The draw leaves Nigeria in fourth place in Group C with seven points, trailing Benin Republic and Lesotho by one point, while South Africa leads with 13 points.
