Supreme Court Dismisses Claims Linking Justice Agim to FCT Minister Wike at UNICAL Convocation

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has dismissed social media reports claiming that Justice Emmanuel Agim accompanied the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to the University of Calabar’s convocation ceremony on Saturday, March 22, 2025.
In a statement signed by the Supreme Court’s Director of Information & Public Relations, Akande Festus, the apex court described the reports as a false narrative and urged the public to disregard them.
According to the statement, Justice Agim attended the event solely as an honouree and an alumnus of the university. The institution’s Governing Council had found him worthy of being conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Law (Doctor Honoris Causa) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the legal profession.
The Supreme Court clarified that Justice Agim’s presence was entirely independent and had no connection to any government office, let alone accompanying a serving or retired government official.
“Any suggestion to the contrary is not only incorrect but also undermines the judicial independence that is fundamental to our democracy,” the statement emphasized.
The court further explained that Justice Agim was initially scheduled to attend the burial of Justice Stanley Alagoa in Bayelsa State, along with other Justices of the Supreme Court. However, he sought permission to attend the convocation instead.
The Supreme Court urged the public and media to verify information from credible sources before sharing or publishing, warning against the spread of misinformation.
