The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the recapture of five out of twelve inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, following a security breach early Monday morning.

NCoS spokesperson Abubakar Umar revealed in a statement that the escape occurred when some inmates tampered with padlocks in a section of the facility, enabling their breakout.

Upon receiving the report, the Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, immediately mobilized a response team in collaboration with security agencies and the Senior Special Assistant to the Kogi State Governor. Security personnel were deployed to restore order and launch a manhunt for the escapees.

The statement read:
“The Nigerian Correctional Service confirms a security breach at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, March 24, 2024. Some inmates manipulated the padlocks in a section of the facility, leading to the escape of 12 individuals.

“Following reports of the incident, the Acting Controller General of Corrections, in collaboration with security agencies, took immediate action. Five of the escaped inmates have been recaptured, while efforts continue to track down the remaining seven.”

Additionally, the NCoS has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the jailbreak. A nationwide security audit of correctional facilities is also underway to prevent future incidents.

The agency reassured the public of its commitment to improving security at all custodial centers across the country. Citizens have been urged to report any suspicious activities to aid in the re-arrest of the remaining escapees.

“The Acting Controller General has ordered a full-scale investigation into the jailbreak. Furthermore, a comprehensive security assessment is ongoing across all correctional facilities in the country to prevent a recurrence,” the statement added.
