The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, has reiterated his zero-tolerance stance on sexual harassment and academic corruption in Nigerian universities.

Speaking with journalists in Calabar, the former Senate Majority Leader condemned lecturers who extort students through the sale of handouts, demand bribes to pass courses, or engage in sexual misconduct.

Ndoma-Egba recalled that during his tenure as Pro-Chancellor at Federal University Lokoja, he dismissed six professors over cases of sexual harassment. He explained that though the incidents occurred before his arrival, they had been buried within the system. As a lawyer, he scrutinized the investigations and ensured that justice was served. He emphasized that academic integrity must be upheld to maintain the global respectability of Nigerian university certificates.

Expressing concern over the declining standard of education, he criticized the growing trend of students attending so-called “miracle centres” where they obtain top grades without merit. He warned that such practices have deeply compromised Nigeria’s academic system.

Highlighting FUOYE’s increasing popularity among students, he attributed its success to strict academic discipline and adherence to schedules. Despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the nine-month Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike, FUOYE ensured that students graduated on time, preserving the institution’s academic calendar.

Regarding allegations of sexual harassment against FUOYE’s Vice-Chancellor, Ndoma-Egba reaffirmed his firm stance on misconduct.

He revealed that the university’s governing council had set up a committee to investigate the claims and that the report was ready. However, due to convocation activities, its review was delayed. He assured that an emergency meeting would be held soon to address the matter, stressing the importance of resolving the issue so the university could move forward without being overshadowed by controversy.
