Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has expressed shock over the poor state of facilities at Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, and vowed to address the situation. During an unscheduled visit to assess the school’s infrastructure, the governor apologized to students for the deplorable conditions they endure.

Otti announced plans to build a new 5,000-capacity hostel and a fully functional cafeteria. He also directed that the use of cooking stoves, kettles, and kerosene in students’ rooms should be prohibited due to safety concerns.

“I just came to see things for myself, and I thought I should take you and the university management by surprise. I’m happy to see you, but I’m very unhappy with the state of the facilities. The conditions under which you live cannot allow you to focus on your academic work. For those of you who excel despite these conditions, we must congratulate you,” the governor said.

He instructed the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndukwe Okudo, to implement a phased approach to renovate existing hostels while the new accommodation is being constructed. He also assured students that essential amenities such as power and potable water would be provided to create a more conducive learning environment.

Governor Otti thanked the students for their patience and apologized on behalf of the state government, promising swift action to improve their living and learning conditions.
