SDP’s Adewole Adebayo Rules Out Merger Ahead of 2027 Elections

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has dismissed any possibility of a merger between the party and others ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Adebayo made this clear during a meeting with members of the Ogun State SDP executive in Abeokuta on Saturday.
He also refuted claims that the SDP is affiliated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that the party remains independent and committed to serving Nigerians.
“Maybe APC has appendicitis; they should go to the hospital to cure it. We are a strong party, older than most parties in Nigeria, and our mission is clear—we are not in government with them,” he said.
Adebayo emphasized that the SDP maintains its integrity, noting that neither he nor any key party executives had joined President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“The reason people underestimate us is because we don’t attack individuals but rather focus on tackling issues. Our party is one of intellect. Since 1989, we have remained true to our ideology,” he added.
According to him, Nigeria’s problems can only be solved by investing in education, healthcare, housing, and infrastructure—core principles championed by the SDP since its inception.
Adebayo said the SDP is open to genuine entrants, not people of questionable character, and that any interested person is welcome.
“Anybody who wants to join the SDP is welcome, except that you must learn our creed. We are for justice, and progress.
“As white as the horse is, so is our heart. We want the Nigerian people to regain what MKO Abiola promised. Abiola promised farewell to poverty.
“We are merging with the Nigerian people. You cannot be on the side of the poor and the side of big men at the same time. SDP is clearly on the side of the people.”
