Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has announced automatic employment for 54 postgraduate students who recently returned from India after completing their studies in health-related fields. The announcement was made during a special reception and Iftar (Ramadan breaking of fast) held in their honor on Friday.

The scholars, whograduated from the Symbiosis International University in Pune, India after completing their studies were beneficiaries of the Kano State foreign scholarship program. Governor Yusuf assured them that their employment had been finalized and that they would be integrated into the Kano State Civil Service to strengthen the healthcare sector. He emphasized that their appointment letters would soon be issued through the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Head of Service.

Urging the graduates to utilize their expertise for the betterment of Kano’s healthcare system, the governor highlighted the need for improvements in maternal healthcare and sickle cell anemia treatment. He also expressed concern over scholars who, after benefiting from government sponsorship, seek employment outside the state or choose to travel abroad instead of contributing to  development of the state. He appealed to the returning graduates to apply their knowledge in serving the people of Kano, particularly in enhancing medical services for women, children and vulnerable groups.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to human capital development, Yusuf pledged to continue the foreign scholarship program initiated by former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. He noted that out of the 1,000 beneficiaries sent abroad, 418 had been placed in universities in India and Uganda last year, all of whom had completed their programs. He further disclosed that the remaining 68 students in India were expected to return by April.

Among the newly employed graduates, 36 are medical doctors, including two veterinary doctors, while the remaining scholars consist of 11 pharmacists, two anatomists, and one radiographer. The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Scholarship Board, Kabiru Getso, described the training of these scholars as a major milestone for the state in terms of manpower. He emphasized that some of the courses studied by the graduates were being introduced for the first time in Kano and Northern Nigeria, positioning the state for significant improvements in healthcare service delivery.
