Woman accused of beating co-tenant arraigned for assault
A 30-year-old woman, Vivian Ottah, who allegedly assaulted her co-tenant, Modupe Lawal, by beating her to pulp was on Wednesday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
Ottah, who resides at Olalubi Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos, is facing a charge of assault.
Police Prosecutor Simeon Ihonwa told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 22 at her residence.
Ihonwa said the accused assaulted the complainant over an undisclosed argument they had.
“She pulled the complainant’s hair and beat her. Efforts by some other co- tenants to settle the matter failed,’’ he said.
Ihonwa said the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested.
The offence, he said, contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 prescribes a three-year jail term for offenders.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O Osunsanmi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She said the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
Osunsanmi adjourned the case till Sept. 14 for mention.
