Otukpo council boss returns N2.2m to Benue SUBEB
By Peter Duru
MAKURDI—THE Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Mr. George Ali, yesterday, voluntarily returned over N2.2 million to Benue State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, being money transferred into his bank account by the finance officers of the board in error.
Presenting a cheque of the said sum to the Director of Finance of the Board in Makurdi, Ali said he returned the money because he was not expecting any payments from the Board and could not, therefore, take that which was not his.
Ali said: “Last week, I got an alert from the bank indicating the payment of over N2.2 million to my former company, being payment for the execution of a contract from SUBEB.
“After examining the records, we realised that the money was wrongfully transferred because after stepping aside from the firm on becoming Chairman of Otukpo council, we didn’t do any job with the board that warranted the payment; I could not sleep.”
Receiving the cheque, the SUBEB Director of Finance, Mr. James Hon, who commended Mr. Ali for his rare display of honesty, urged other Nigerians to emulate.
He said: “On July 31, we had received a letter from Zaginas, intimating us that they received bank payment alert wrongly transferred to them for a contract they did not execute; we are deeply touched by what they have done today.”
