Mikel, Ideye missing in Tiajin Teda demolition
Super Eagles duo of John Obi Mikel and Brown Ideye were conspicuously absent as their Chinese Super League side Tiajin Teda were handed a 3-0 away demolition by Guangzhou Evergrande, Saturday.
Mikel who is the team’s captain and doubles as Super Eagles captain is yet to play competitive game for the side though he has returned to light training recovering from injury.
The 30 year old recently re-echoed his eagerness to return to action for both club and country. The Nigerian international has missed over half a dozen games of the side including missing the Super Eagles 2019 Nations Cup qualifiers against South Africa which Eagles lost 2-0 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state in June.
Compatriot and teammate Brown Ideye was equally not listed in Saturday’s tie which saw hosts Guangzhou Evergrande leave victory song late, grabbing three goals in 13 minutes including in the four minutes of added time. Gao lin, Ricardo
Goulart and Shang Wenzhao accounted for the goals in the 81st 90th and 94th minute respectively.
Tiajin Teda are struggling to leave the relegation zone with 15 points in 18 matches even as fans of the side continue to pray and express hope that their captain returns to action to hold the midfield and help remedy the situation.
Elsewhere Odion Ighalo saw 90 minutes action against Obafemi Martins’ Shanghai Shenhua though Martins was an unused substitute in the tie that ended 1-1
Saturday’s victory has seen Guangzhou Evergrande further consolidate on their strong hold at the summit of the 16-team log with 41 points in 19 matches.
